Bulb Iris

These iris are all grown from bulbs. They produce smaller flowers than bearded iris. Most are best for rock gardens or in front of the border.

Dutch Iris, Iris hollandica
Hybridized by Dutch growers. Flowering in March and April, they grow 18 to 24” tall. Flower colors range from pale blue and lemon to deep purple, bronze, rose, and gold. Quite popular with florists. Dutch iris requires well-drained soil.

English Iris, Iris xiphiodides
Flowers are larger than Dutch Iris, and have the velvety texture of Japanes irises. Early summer bloom after Dutch iris.

Reticulated Iris, Iris reticulata
Ideal for rock gardens, iris reticulata have petite, 4 to 6″ tall flowers and grassy foliage. They need consistent moisture in the spring but should stay dry summer, fall, and winter.

Spanish Iris, Iris xiphium
From species native to Spain and north Africa. Smaller flowers in blue, violet, white or yellow. It blooms later than Dutch iris. It needs to be planted in well-drained beds in very light open soil, moderately enriched, and should have a rather sheltered position.
